Diesel above $6 keeps US parcel fuel surcharges near 29%
US retail diesel cost 67% more on 5 October 2026 than a year earlier. The diesel-crude price gap, a gauge of refiners' margins, nearly tripled in September.
What happened
The US average retail price of on-highway diesel was $6.20 a gallon on 5 October 2026, against $3.71 a year earlier, according to weekly EIA data. It peaked at $6.53 on 21 September. Regular gasoline was $4.35, up $1.23 from a year earlier. The US Energy Information Administration said in its 6 October outlook that diesel averaged $6.29 in September, and it expects $5.19 for 2026 as a whole and $4.49 in 2027.
Diesel has risen much faster than crude. The gap between New York Harbor ultra-low sulphur diesel and Brent crude averaged $93.51 a barrel in September 2026, against $32.37 in September 2025, according to Novus Data calculations from EIA daily spot prices for diesel and Brent. The International Energy Agency said in its September report that exports of refined products and liquefied petroleum gas from the Gulf were about 3.7 million barrels a day below February levels in August, World Oil reported.

Why it matters
Parcel carriers pass diesel costs on to shippers through fuel surcharges that reset weekly. FedEx set its Ground fuel surcharge at 28.75% of the transport charge for the week of 12 to 18 October, down from 29.25% the week before, according to its published table, which tracks the EIA's weekly diesel price with a lag. With diesel at or above $4.99, the FedEx Ground surcharge moves 0.25 percentage points for each 9-cent change in price, three times as steeply as below that level. UPS publishes a similar diesel-linked schedule. Air services follow jet fuel instead: the FedEx surcharge on domestic package services other than Ground, which is based on the US Gulf Coast jet fuel price, rose to 32.25% for the week of 12 October from 31.75%, according to the same FedEx table.
Truckload prices show the same pressure. The producer price index for long-distance general freight truckload was 13.9% higher in August 2026 than a year earlier, according to Bureau of Labor Statistics data published by the St Louis Fed. The August consumer price index showed fuel oil, used for home heating in the US Northeast, up 52.0% on the year, according to the BLS.
Because surcharges follow diesel with a lag, a fall in pump prices reaches freight bills only gradually. Diesel's 18-cent fall in the week to 5 October, from $6.38 to $6.20, moved the FedEx Ground surcharge down half a point, to 28.75%, for the week of 12 October, under FedEx's published table. The diesel premium over crude reflects lost refined-product exports as well as the price of crude, so freight costs could stay high even if crude falls (inferred).
Who it reaches
Parcel shippers (sector). Businesses shipping by FedEx Ground pay a fuel surcharge of 28.75% on transport charges in the week of 12 October. Confidence: reported. Source: FedEx fuel surcharge table, accessed 13 October 2026.
Truckload carriers and their customers (sector). Long-distance truckload prices rose 13.9% year on year in August. Carriers pay for fuel before surcharges reimburse them, so smaller carriers with less cash carry the cost for longer. Confidence: reported for prices, inferred for the cash-flow effect. Households heating with oil (sector). Fuel oil prices in the consumer price index were up 52.0% year on year in August, ahead of the heating season. Confidence: reported. Source: BLS, 11 September 2026.
What would change this view
- The diesel margin. A sustained fall in the gap between diesel and Brent towards its September 2025 level of about $32 a barrel would show product supply recovering.
- Gulf product exports. A recovery in refined-product shipments from the Gulf would add supply to markets that have lost it.
- The weekly EIA price. It is published each week, and FedEx resets its surcharges weekly.
